PURCHASED DATE: JANUARY 22, 2009
SELLER: SPEED COMPUTER, SM CITY BAGUIO, PHILIPPINES
PROBLEM OCCURED: JULY 2009

I went to the seller they instructed me to go to the HP service center at Baguio Olympia, thats 1st week of August, they told me they will replace lcd in 2-3 days and may last upto 5 days if lcd is not available in the philippines, it's now last week of sept until now there was no replacement they dont even bother to inform me about the development so i need to initiate to call them. to my effort to follow it up i went to the Seller (SPEED Computer) telling them to help me follow it up, they advice me to leave my laptop to them for a month or more, they don't know!! i did not leave my laptop because i need it that's why i bought it!!! im thinking to buy a external drive for my files, another expenditure in my part because im not sure how long will this laptop will last. small flickering lines before but now the whole screen is blinking during start-up.

its so hard to earn money just to buy a defective laptop, what a waste!!

you may contact me at rfragos@yahoo.com

i just praying that God will soften the heart of the HP management to act accordingly to this problem, if not i'll leave them in the hands of God.

Problem:
It was around 2nd week of September when I first saw a green line on the top-most part of my screen. At first I thought it had been there all along, and that I just didn't notice it. However, one time, after booting my laptop from sleep mode, the screen flickered every 5 seconds for a duration of around 2 minutes. Then it stopped.

I thought it was nothing, until the problem began to get worse. My screen would start to shake intermittently for about 10 minutes, and sometimes longer.

Right now, my screen never stops to flicker to every 3 seconds. There are also times when the whole screen would turn white, freeze, then would go back to normal state. After around 10 seconds, the whole process repeats.

Based from what I have read, LCD replacement is just a temporary solution since some users have experienced the same problem even after having their LCDs replaced. I believe the best solution is to have a product recall of all Presario CQ40 series, since it is now obvious that majority of the owners have been experiencing the same problem.

Problem:
After 2 months from the date of purchase, the flickering line at the bottom of the screen appeared. At first I didn’t pay much attention since I thought it will be gone in a few days. But then I started to get really bothered when I noticed that the flickering line gets bigger as days passed. As of this writing, the damn line now covers almost half of my task bar which is really irritating!

I went to HP Trinoma and they advised me that I have to leave my laptop for a month since the part replacement will come from Singapore. I told them that I can’t afford to lose my laptop for that amount of time since I need it in my daily activities (which is exactly the reason why I bought a laptop in the first place!) I asked if I can just bring my laptop once the needed parts arrive, and they said I really have to leave it since they’re going to forward it in Makati site.

What pisses me off is that, when I asked if I can just return this model since it’s not in good quality anyway and have them replace it with other model in which I emphasized that I’m willing to pay for the difference, the personnel said product replacement is good only for 7 days from the date of purchase. WTF! The damn flickering problem occurred 2 months from the date of service! I believe it’s HP’s responsibility to replace this models since it’s obviously out of good quality standards! HP sucks and I really regret why I chose this brand over its competitors.

I will be present on any plans or actions that we, the victims need to take. I’m so sick and tired of HP disregarding our concerns, so let’s all do something to make our voices heard!

I suggest that the meet up should be scheduled on weekends (either Saturday or Sunday) since I work on Monday- Friday. Add me on ym, my user id is jane_kiedis.

Btw, I am the "swanvixen" on HP Forum.

Keep me updated!

*i'll post the serial number and the p/n as soon as i retrieve my receipt.

PURCHASED: February 8, 2009 (under warranty)
PURCHASED AT: PC Worx, Gilmore, QC

I am having the same problem too. i bought my laptop last February and last June, the thin line at the bottom of the screen started to appear. it wasn't bothersome for the first few weeks but it started to become thicker and it started to blink. After a few more weeks, the whole screen started to flicker. It was sooooooo hard to work. I stopped using my laptop after the whole screen started to flicker. That was mid-July. i haven't used the laptop ever since.

I have already tried to bring it back to the shop where they bought it but it just stayed there for another month. WHen they were asked when the LCD replacements would come, the cannot give me a definite date because there's a regional shortage of parts. I have already gotten mad at them but I realized it was pretty pointless because HP Philippines is the one who handles the shipment of the parts. AND MY GOD. HP HASN'T BEEN WORKING VERY WELL TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM.

First and foremost, I think that this (having a lot of people experience THE SAME problem with their laptops) is a sign that they distributed a defective batch of CQ40 models. And I don't think they have given the public the ample notice about this problem. CONSUMER RIGHTS, PEOPLE. We have the right to complete and correct information. First and foremost, we weren't informed of the defects of the products (and i don't think they have done concrete steps to inform us until now) and they haven't been giving the correct information as to when the LCD replacements would arrive.

This is really annoying. I bought an HP laptop, chose it over other brands because I thought HP was reliable and I though that their reviews were good. I also believe that people buy laptops to USE THEM, whether in the office, in businesses or in school and not to have them deposited in service centers only to wait for an indefinite period for replacements.

It wasn't our fault that we got their defectvie products. They owe us something.

I have the same problem with everybody..

I bought my compaq presario cq40-310au last april, and i was so happy because i was able to have a laptop that i can use at home. But as months passed by, last august to be exact, i noticed some horizontal colored and flickering lines at the lower part of my LCD panel display.

I was bothered so I reported this to the store which i bought my laptop and it is very frustrating because they have at least 90 clients here in Davao Philippines that has the same problem as mine, and HP support is so SLOW, until now there are only 19 lcd replacements have arrived at the store where i purchase my laptop. I am so disappointed, since i invested this laptop with my hard earned money. ..

i hope hp will do something about this.

I purchased my 2nd laptop , this HP DV4 only a month and a half back. A small flickering line which appeared on the taskbar has gone bigger almost 3-4 pixels and covers a quarter of my taskbar. This is really annoying. From the posts here I reckon this needs to be sent to the HP Service Center...luckily this is in warranty, was thinking of getting an extended warranty but now I am wondering if I can keep this with me for long enough to need an extension on the warranty. I am hugely dissapointed with HP and will never buy from them again....I hope other people do the same.

Problem occured sometime between July and August 2009. At first I thought it was only a minor glitch. A friend of mine told me that his unit was still in MAKATI service center (4weeks) and still not yet repaired with the same problem. I cannot afford to leave my unit there for 4 weeks. I can see 3 lines now flickering every 3 seconds. This is very irriating.

If needed, count me in the complaint. This is hard earned money I spent on this unit.

(CND91159TP – original unit returned May 04, 2009; Unit malfunctioned)

Date Purchased: May 01, 2009
Retailer: Octagon Computer Superstore, Robinson’s Place, Lipa City

History:
around 2-3 week of June

the LCD starts flickering, random, intermittent LCD flickering

I reported the incident to HP tech support. An Indian tech guy diagnosed the issue and we both concluded that LCD must be replaced. HP said that there is part shortage.

3rd week of July
Flickering becomes unbearable. there was still part shortage. I surrendered the unit to HP buendia service center.

Aug 17, 2009
LCD was replaced. Laptop working as expected.

Sept 10
problem re occurred. LCD flickering now constantly shaking. Still parts shortage as per HP advised.

Oct 20
Surrendered the laptop to HP buendia service Center

Oct 23
LCD again was replaced. Working as expected.

Oct 24
While working on a word document, LCD flickered, screen went black. rebooted the computer, went back to normal operating condition.

Oct 25
While working on spreadsheets, LCD again flickers. giving, green, orange distorted display. I thought it has something to do with programs/drivers/Graphic Card/Motherboard. i took a picture and video. uploaded them via youtube using a different unit. i plugged my monitor and it gives a superb display, no display on laptop LCD.

It is true that parts now are available at HP. they ordered a lot. henry lavado constantly giving me updates regarding this issue. he is even calling me aoutside office hours. but that doesnt change the fact that this unit is having a hell of a problem. i am an ex-HP employee from North America. so i understand how service center works. but i am asking henry to escalate this issue to business managers who can possibly replace the unit.

I'm also having a problem with my laptop. I'm very much disappointed to HP that they let those defective units to be sold out in the market. It was really annoying for a newly bought laptop to have that kind of trouble. Imagine the flickering! At first, only a line or two flickers at the bottom of the screen then after few minutes, the flickering started to get bigger and almost busted the taskbar! I already brought it to TCA for repair almost a month ago. Until now, my unit was not yet done! I want my laptop back! HP repairs very slow! A week or two is enough for them to fix the problems of my notebook. A month is a long wait for me!

Please help me! Thanks!

I am from Nepal and my dad bought me this laptop (cq40 108TU) fro somewhere in Korea. First time round i had a different problem with the screen I cant really describe...the screen slowly being covered by weird white thing...anyways i got the screen replaced at my own costs, and i am a student.

Then after using it for 2 weeks, i am seeing the same flickes..lines..stripes...whatever you call it...they are at the bottom of my screen and yes they are expanding.

But i bet if HP do nothing based on the forum, i guess they cant do anything to your blog too. If they claim new video card or replaced whole new modal they would just lost their money. In fact, money comes first to faces, they can just declare you as first buy first serve, after you buy the things is yours. They can just sue you instead, they are rich obviously.

Ive been to their service Center in Buendia numerous times, and went home with just promises that they will have things fixed. but promises wont do right? we need actions.
plus, their pick up and delivery service really sucks. why would you deliver just the computer and leave the adapter at the warehouse? anu un, installment?

It occured last august of this year. 22. I also bought Compaq Presario CQ40-336TU. However, I encountered an entirely different problem. I bought my laptop last August 5, 2009. After three months, the laptop encountered intermittent hangs. I couldn't use it properly. December 2009, I brought it to Electroworld where I bought it. They reformatted it. After a few weeks, the computer had the same problem again. So when I returned to Electroworld, I had it sent for repairs. After more than two weeks, they contacted me and told me i can pick it up. They told me they replaced the motherboard. When I tried it at home, the laptop overheated twice. So I brought it back again to Electroworld the next day.

I insisted that they give me a new unit since the one they gave me is defective. The laptops condition worsened after sending it to them for repairs.

According to them, they can't do that since they have a process to follow. That all I'm entitled to are repairs and not a replacement unit. They also told me that all the internal and external parts may be replaced except for the housing of the laptop. They won't and will not give me a new unit for the defective one they gave me.

If you have any info about how I could have them replace my laptop or have a refund, please email me at animegirlbim@yahoo.com.

However on Oct 25,2009 after using the laptop for a institutional mass it went crazy... First the Vista kept on repeating the uncompleted update...I went to the service center COMPUSERVE in SM Annex
After October I kept coming back to the service center every three days and kept calling to bugged them. I finally got my laptop after 3 mos..Yes I only got my laptop January 2010. They said my problem was totally different because i got defective ODD and HDD....and it really to a while for the replacement parts to come. I had wasted an entire quarter in teaching because i didn't had my trusty laptop to help me. As a teacher it is also important for us to have technology on the side... So far my fear is that the flickering of my laptop from time to time although its minor, i'm hoping its just a minor glitch...However I am also disappointed in why HP-Compaq Philippines would sell such defective products and they have undeniably slow system. I hope this CQ-40 will be recalled and exchange for much better. I thought buying a CQ40 is much better than buying a NEO brand laptop to my surprise the NEO brand outplayed the CQ40 even tough it had a busted LCD screen due to my recklessness
    HP Philippines....shame on you

if i would replace the lcd screen, would the problem occur again? If not, if i would go to an hp service center, how long will it take?
    Thanks

  27. Hi mangtomas,

I think the new release are good, but some service center is trying to use the old one to replace our unit that's why the problem still occur... I don't know... sorry the the service center who's doing that haha!

  28. Oh my god reading all these info make me sick, I have the same same issue on my Compaq Presario CQ40, I bought it July 2009 at Park Square Makati (forgot the name of the shop) first time i went to the service center is because of the adaptor over heating, and now after only a few months the LCD is not working as in nada on the screen, so I sent it backt o HP service center last Feb 18 and i haven't heard from them yet, and will probably call on monday.

I wanted to join to the complaint in DTI, if they are going to just give a temporary Fix for this issue, might as well have them replace the unit, with another model. This is not fair, what we paid for the unit is hard earned money.

I will follow this site regularly for updates, please post more details, Im so happy i found this site. I will keep you posted too on what happened to my laptop.

    MODELO: HP Pavilion dv2872la
    S / N: 2CE81902NB
    P / N: KQ723LA

ADQUIRIDO FECHA: 1 de octubre del 2008
    VENDEDOR: AIROLDI COMPUTACIÓN
    FACTURA Nº 0028-00016521

Elapsed Warranty (but for only 2 months)

I have also encountered the same problem. The LCD suddenly started flickering. I think that there is a certain batch of compaq presario laptop which has a problem with lcd. If this cannot be remedied, we must fight for our rights. We pay for it and we beleive that HP product are of high quality however why are customers encountering the same problem. This is not an isolated case. Hp should really address these concern or else they will lose their name. A product recall is a must. The company should check the range of affected units and give due action.

HP Philippines ... You evidently need to give us product recall!!! FAST!!!!

  37. Hope it's not yet too late but I agree with demanding a product recall. Bought my laptop last year April 4, and the horizontal lines appeared around August, got thicker then with the same flickering problem. The distributor replaced the LCD in October 2009. And just this Sunday night (April 4 -- exactly one year after I purchased this unit, and 6 months after LCD replacement), the lines have appeared again. I called the distributor this morning but they said HP won't replace the unit. This is not fair. We chose Compaq because of its brand reputation, but it turns out that my sister-in-law's Neo laptop is even more reliable!

I want to join the meeting. Please email me the details. Thanks.

Based on everybody's statement, i fear i might have the same problem as well. i bought the computer last year, June 2009. i'm not having any problem yet with the product. So, if i get any symptoms, and my computer is out of warranty (1year), that would be really a problem. my friend's CQ340 had this LCD issue and he was able to have its LCD changed. Im fearing that the time will come that my computer will experience this sicko defects!!!

Thank you for contacting HP eSolutions.

This e mail is in reference to the Service Request: 4452252

I understand from the case notes that, there is display issue in HP Compaq Presario CQ40-340TU Notebook PC .

As per the Serial Number: CNPXXXXXX and Product Number: NM574PA warranty of the unit is expired.

AS per our database, there is no known issue for the same model. Hence the only option is to fix the issue on chargeable basis of parts and labour.

If you wish to contact HP Authorized Service Center and fix the issue, let me know the following details.

I hope that the HP Compaq Company will do something with the people who bought the unit that was discountinued from selling those product models. We are the victims so they must do something or even replace our units with the better one. I heard the LCD is the common problem of this 310au the flickering LCD and according in some forums this really sucks. And I'm one of the less fortunate to have this model. I was fooled by the specs without even knowing that in the long run I will end up with regrets. I hope that HP will do something about this products.

  57. I trusted HP and this is what I get. First the LCD problem (which was not rampant at that time, so I thought I was just unlucky), and now the motherboard died right when the warranty was over. People in computer repair shops say that this is really an HP issue, and a lot of people have experienced this. HP seems to be deliberately fooling the public just to get some cash, and when it's time for their customer service to kick in... we get nothing.

Please contact me about any updates on this issue. I'll try contacting HP again. My email is dindeen_jaro at hotmail

  58. I'm an owner of an HP6530s laptop. I bought my unit on March 2009. I experienced the flickering lines below the task bar on September 2009. Since it was still under warranty, I went to the seller and they had to replace the LCD without costs on my part.

Last weekend, August 14, 2010, I experienced the same flickering under the task bar again. I'm afraid its the same problem as the one I experienced on September 2009. I believe its a problem on the LCD again. Since my unit's warranty already expired, I don't really much have of an option.

On this regard, may I just know what transpired or what happened to your complaint on the matter lodged with the Department of Trade and Industry?

I hope to hear from you. Thanks.

If others experiencing LCD problem, mine is the FUCKING battery. 3 battery replacement in 7 months. well they have spare, but the most dangerous i ever face is the first one, because of factory defect. hot to touch while using and charging.. second battery, 50% remaining but the notebook is dramatically loosing power.. i reported this into DTI of faulty battery and they inform HP to replace a new battery and extend the warranty for 3 years. a contract was signed between HP and DTI in behalf of my defective unit. but above all I WILL NEVER BUY AN HP OR COMPAQ PC ANYMORE EVEN THEY OFFER ME A DISCOUNT..

  64. argh! HP CQ40 sucks!!! I also experienced that effin' LCD and battery troubles!! I bought my laptop last year January 2009 at SM baguio Speed computers. And same as yours Rafael, it took about 5months to fix my lcd (by warranty at Olympia)! And just two months ago, i bought a new battery! That old faulty battery won't even last an hour! I kept plugging it so i decided to get a new one! And now, recently, just a week ago, my laptop is totally black out!! I brought it to Enigma and they said harddrive should be replaced as well as the MOTHERBOARD!! also, and AGAIN the LCD!! Argh, such a waste of money!

it goes without saying that i am another disgruntled owner of a CQ40 laptop. We purchased our CQ40-517TU from SM Baguio (Gigahertz) on Nov of 2009 (under terms by credit card). I have just finished paying of the unit and within the last year of owning it, we have had the LCD replaced 3 times under warranty. Like most of you, the LCD showed shaking and pixelating, initially at the lower portion where the tool bar is usually located. this progressed to include the middle portion of the lcd. Right now, the thing won't boot up... probably a motherboard, processor or memory issue (and its now out of warranty)... asar talaga. sayang pera:(

My laptop wont start up or boot up, blank screen and led lights from caps lock indicator and the disk drive just keep on blinking. I had it check in a service center this afternoon. I was curious about the problem that made me do some research on the web, i found out that the cq40 model has plenty of complaints and problems. Mostly the lcd and the motherboard were defectives. Now I had a bad regards about the HP Compaq brands. Hp should do a recall and DTI should stop the sale of HP laptops in the Phils.

  83. I bought an HP computer in 2009 August, HDX 16t series and I found plenty of evidence on the HP website forums itself that HP is at fault with defective parts with many of their models. My issue is a screen flickering problem with HP and they are obligated to fix it at no charge. It is not user abuse and if they don't fix it I won't be purchasing from them again, and I don't think I have to do anything myself. But HP by itself will be displayed as having a bad image and no one will want to buy them. Sorry HP.
